We stock and install Craftsman-compatible garage door rollers throughout New York, and most roller replacement jobs run $130 to $260, parts and labor included. Same-day replacement is usually available because we carry packs of standard nylon and steel rollers on our trucks, sized for Craftsman’s most common 2-inch track systems. You’ll usually notice the problem first as a door that’s suddenly louder, jerky on the way up, or hanging slightly tilted when it’s open, like one side is dragging behind the other.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To
If your opener says Craftsman and your door rides on standard 2-inch tracks, this applies to you. Most Craftsman garage door systems use rollers with a 7/16-inch stem and a 1-3/4-inch or 2-inch nylon wheel. That’s the spec we stock the most of in New York, because it covers the majority of doors from the 1990s through today, including the common 139-series opener setups paired with residential doors.
One compatibility gotcha we see regularly: some older Craftsman doors built before 1995 use a 3/8-inch stem, and if you force a 7/16-inch stem into that hinge socket, it binds the moment the door moves. We always measure the old roller’s stem with a caliper before quoting, because the difference is invisible to the eye and expensive to get wrong. As far as OEM versus aftermarket, Craftsman source-tags rollers from major component suppliers. A quality 10-ball nylon roller with sealed bearings will typically outlast the original part, and we install aftermarket equivalents that meet or exceed the original spec. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Craftsman, so our recommendation is based on what holds up, not what’s printed on the package.

Signs Your Craftsman Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The door sounds like it’s grinding gravel. When nylon roller wheels crack or the bearings seize, the wheel stops spinning and drags flat against the track. That grinding noise is steel-on-steel friction, and it only gets worse.
- The door jerks or shudders on the way up. A flat-spotted roller or one whose bearing has locked forces the panels to catch every few inches. You’ll feel it as a stutter, especially in the first foot of travel.
- The door hangs unevenly partway open. When rollers on one side wear faster, the door cocks slightly. New York winters and salt air near the coast accelerate this, since roller bearings dry out and rust starts at the shield.
- You can see cracks or chips in the black nylon wheel. Look at the roller while the door is closed. If the wheel has hairline cracks or actual chunks missing, it’s failed, not failing. Cracks start at the axle bore and spread outward.
- The door wanders side to side during travel. Worn roller stems wobble inside the hinge, which lets the door drift left and right. Check the gap between the door edge and the track on each side. If it changes as the door moves, you’ve got slop in the rollers.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Roller replacement in New York runs $130 to $260 installed, depending on how many rollers you’re replacing and the condition of the hinges. A standard 10-roller residential door falls toward the middle of that range. If your hinges are also worn, and rollers on older New York doors often take their hinges with them, you’ll pay toward the upper end because we replace the hinge and roller as a matched set rather than patching one side.
That price includes the rollers themselves, the labor to remove and reinstall each hinge, track inspection, and a final balance and alignment check on the door. We quote the job in writing before the first tool comes off the truck, so the number you approve is the number on the invoice. Every roller replacement is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the roller fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

Rollers on the side of the door can be checked with the door closed: look for cracks, wobble, and flat spots. That’s safe and we encourage it. The bottom rollers are different. They ride under constant tension from the lift cables, and removing them without releasing the cable tension is the point where DIY goes wrong. The cables can snap loose and release the energy stored in the springs.
Top and side rollers can sometimes be swapped one at a time with the door down, but the bottom two are the ones that wear first, and they’re the ones we see people get hurt working on. If you hear grinding or see cracked wheels, call us at (585) 669-6563 and we’ll quote the job over the phone, then show up with the right stems measured and the right wheels on the truck.
FAQs
Nylon rollers with sealed bearings typically last 10 to 15 years in New York, less if the door faces direct sun or sits near the water, where bearing shields rust through faster. If your rollers are the original hard plastic wheels without bearings, they were due for replacement years ago.
No. Once the wheel is cracked or the bearing is seized, the roller is done. There’s no way to recondition a sealed bearing, and the labor to try costs more than a new roller. Call (585) 669-6563 and we’ll get you squared away.
For a standard 10-roller residential door, the job takes about 90 minutes to two hours. That includes checking each hinge, aligning the track, and testing the balance. We do it in one visit on the same day you call in most cases.
Yes. Our trucks carry 2-inch and 1-3/4-inch nylon rollers with 7/16-inch stems, plus 3/8-inch stems for older Craftsman doors. We also carry replacement hinges, since worn rollers and worn hinges often go together. If your door needs something we don’t have on hand, we can get it the next day from our suppliers, and we’ll tell you that before any work is scheduled.
